"Art" thou wonderful to look at!. Something I find as important in a home as furniture is Art. Good art - although this is always a highly controversial and somewhat personal subject because taste differs from person to person AND THEN it opens up the whole debate about "what is considered art"? Let us not go down that road. Let’s keep it simple. For me, art should have 3 main things. 1) Subject - if the subject doesn’t grab you then so be it. End of story. 2) Colour composition - this can sometimes go against number 1 because often it doesn’t matter what the subject is, if the colours are right then I’ll like it (confused yet? just wait….). 3) Scale. Now that doesn’t mean oversized but more about whether the scale fits and compliments the subject and detail. So, take the piece above for example.
1) The subject may not be to everyones liking but I find it intriguing - it makes me want to know more and want to study it.
2) The colour composition - It grabs my attention and I love the way the vivid pink is centralised because it really draws attention to the subject (not overlooking the fact that this piece was clearly created to cause controversy)
3) Scale - if this image were a small photograph would it have the same impact? Personally, I don’t think so. I think a large part of its appeal comes from the scale.
Anyway, you may or may not agree with what I think but that’s the beauty of Art - it’s in the eye of the beholder ;)
